چکیده

Forest and forest product certification systems have grown rapidly in recent years, developing in parallel with the many international, national, and regional initiatives attempting to define and promote sustainable forest management (SF M ) (C arbarle et al. 1995, L awes et al. 1999). T he area certified under the most widely adopted international system, the Forest Stewardship C ouncil, is now over 22 million hectares (F SC 2001a), nearly all of which has occurred since 1995. T he Sustainable Forestry I nitiative (SF I ) Program of the A merican Forestry and Paper A ssociation (A F PA ) reported 30 million hectares enrolled in North A merica (A merican Forestry and Paper A ssociation 2001), also primarily in the last few years. T he intent of certification is to provide a market-based mechanism to encourage and reward SF M (K ajiwara and M alnick 1999), and thereby provide a market advantage over less responsible forestry practices. T he goals of SF M are complex and are defined by social as well as biological criteria. Sustainably managed forests can include those managed to retain as many of their natural ecological qualities as possible while extracting commercial products, to areas managed PAPE R S

The Effects of Poplar Plantations on Vascular Plant Diversity in Riparian Landscapes

Riparian vegetation, which performs many key ecological functions, has been modified or lost at an alarming rate during the past century as a result of human activity. The aims of this study are (a) to investigate the effects of poplar plantations on plant diversity in riparian zones; and (b) to estimate the ecological implications of extending cover by poplar plantations. For this purpose, we ...

Consumers' Attitudes Towards the Development of Transgenic Forest Trees and their Products in Greece

This paper aims to examine the attitudes of the consumers in Greece towards the use of biotechnology in forest plantations and their potential purchases of forest transgenic products. Three groups of factors related the consumers’ attitude on the use of biotechnology in forest plantations with the potential purchases of transgenic forest products: (a) the potential negative environmental impact...

Lead and Cadmium Concentrations in Throughfall of Pinus eldarica

This research was carried out in order to quantify throughfall (TF) and interception loss (I) and to compare the chemical composition of TF, i.e. lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) as well as electrical conductivity (EC) and pH beneath Pinus eldarica and Cupressus arizonica plantations and the open field rainfall. The research was accomplished in the Chitgar Forest Park, a semi-arid polluted urban area...

How diverse are epiphyte assemblages in plantations and secondary forests in tropical lowlands?

The on-going destruction of old-growth forests puts tropical forest species under great pressure because of the resulting loss of habitat. An important biotic component of these forests are vascular epiphytes, which structurally depend on trees. In human-modified landscapes potential hosts may still be present, e.g. in the form of isolated remnant trees, small groups of planted trees, in patche...

Foraging ecology and occurrence of 7 sympatric babbler species (Timaliidae) in the lowland rainforest of Borneo and peninsular Malaysia

Understanding foraging strategies of birds is essential to understanding mechanisms of their community assembly. To provide such information on a key Southeast Asian rainforest family, the babblers (Timaliidae), we evaluated foraging behavior and abundance in 7 morphologically and behaviorally similar sympatric species (Cyanoderma erythropterum, C. rufifrons, Stachyris maculata, S. nigricollis,...
